The Darjeeling Limited (15)
Wednesday 27th May 2009 at the Town Hall, Berwick. What a delightfully quirky film to end our Season with! Three brothers set off on a train voyage across India to "bond" and "find themselves" spiritually. Events overtake and they become stranded with eleven suitcases and a laminating machine. A very different journey ensues. Charmingly likeable, loopy and occasionally poignant. Come enjoy a colourful ride!

Why Films in Berwick?
After the demise of the Berwick Playhouse in 2005, the chances for local people to get to see films became limited, with no dedicated cinema between Edinburgh and Newcastle. Berwick Film Society was set up after film enthusiasts' appetite was whetted by the first Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival. Its raison d'etre is to bring to Berwick and surrounding communities our own unique programme of movies from all over the world. We feel we can take audiences to places, cultures and filmic experiences that they wouldn't otherwise be able to access. Coupled with the mainstream and classic programmes of films offered by The Maltings Arts Centre (where we will be based from autumn '09), between us we now offer a solid and appealing blend of films to please most tastes and ages.
Films shown locally provide an event for the community and encourage people to come out and meet up, without having to make a big journey. We welcome members from near and far – the more, the better! Joining the Film Society is the best deal, at only £28 for the season (working out at just £2.80 per film).
Finally, we confess to being hopelessly biased: we believe a strong programme of films can provoke discussion, offer insight, escape, inspiration, a mental and visual feast and — not least — a really good night out! In this time of everyone feeling the big pinch, popping out to see a film is a relatively inexpensive way to enjoy a few hours of escapism!
Where and When?
Our Film Seasons run from September through to May of the following year. Films are screened *once a month on the last Wednesday* of each month during the Season, (unless otherwise notified e.g. at Christmas). Our filmshows from September 2009 onwards will be held at The Maltings Theatre, Eastern Lane, Berwick Upon Tweed, just a stone's throw from the main street and with its own car park. The Maltings bar will be open an hour before the films start (bar open 6.30pm, films start 7.30pm) and will stay open after the show until 10.30. Ideal for meeting up with friends for a glass of wine before the film starts and staying on to chat with us about the film afterwards.
Each Film Society season offers 10 great films consisiting of 9 screenings (one a month) plus free entry to our selected film at the annual Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival, (18-20 September 2009 and summer 2010)
Please contact us if you'd like to join (it's the best deal, working out at £2.80 per film) or to be added to our mailing list for programme information and occasional updates. (We never pass on your details to any third party).
Alternatively, you are welcome to come along to any Berwick Film Society filmshow and pay on the door, the price will be the same as The Maltings tickets, currently £4.50.
What Are Our Goals?
Simply put, to bring film closer to local people. We already screen films in Wooler, lend our DVD projection equipment to The Maltings and run films for community groups in Northumberland and the Borders, plus we offer advice to new film societies and other film groups and will continue to provide this service.
